GHSA-vgv8-5cpj-qj2f · Severity: critical · Ecosystem: pip — pymatgen vulnerable to arbitrary code execution when parsing a maliciously crafted JonesFaithfulTransformation transformation_string
Pymatgen (Python Materials Genomics) is an open-source Python library for materials analysis. A critical security vulnerability exists in the `JonesFaithfulTransformation.from_transformation_str()` method within the `pymatgen` library prior to version 2024.2.20. This method insecurely utilizes `eval()` for processing input, enabling execution of arbitrary code when parsing untrusted input. Version 2024.2.20 fixes this issue.
Conclusion & alert: CVE-2024-23346 is rated High Exploit Risk (91/100): CVSS Critical severity, with high exploitation likelihood (EPSS 59.29%, 98th percentile). Core evidence: 3 public exploit reference(s) are indexed (Exploit-DB). EPSS rose +4.40% over the last day, indicating growing attacker interest. Mandatory action: Public exploits are available—assess exposure, apply mitigations, and prioritize patching.
Risk is dynamic; we continuously reassess and refresh what is shown on this page as upstream context changes.
